BEWARE!!! ATM Frauds

Have  been receiving emails regards to frauds through Automated Teller Machine (ATM). The latest that I received is as follows;

Warning from Bank Negara!!
Dear All, For your information. This is true and already happen in Kota Kinabalu so be careful.
Please give wide publicity !

Bank ATM ' s Converted to Steal IDs of Bank Customers

A team of organized criminals are installing equipment on legitimate bank ATM ' s in at least 2 regions to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN . The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM (see photos) . If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank using the phone on the front of the ATM .

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN are cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment . A ' skimmer ' is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car .

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM .

The PIN reading camera being installed on the ATM is housed in an innocent looking leaflet enclosure ..

The camera shown installed and ready to capture PIN ' s by looking down on the keypad as you enter your PIN

By seeing the probe that shown in this pictures, i would say that it is 100% possible. In fact there was an occasion in somewhere in the3 90’s a smaller probe was fixed on to the ATM card feeder.

After the a few hours the culprit will collect back the probe and connects it to their computer and retrieve the data from the probe. Bank’s were forced to step up their securities at that time and fix the problem by placing a special fixtures in front of the ATM card reader.

I would suggest all ATM user’s be very cautious when performing their transactions;

1. Look for any anonymity on the ATM hardware. Usually you can detect the difference of any new hardware fixtures attached to the old ones.

2. Quality of the hardware cover will not be the same as the original ATM as the fraudsters will try to minimize their operating cost by using cheap materials.

3. Look for anyone suspicious around the area of the machine doing nothing.

Windows 7 Beta

I have been testing Windows 7 Ultimate Beta for quite some time now on my Aspire one. There is nothing significant changes in the new Windows  version, it is almost the same look as Windows Vista.(to whom had ever use linux with compiz, linux is better looking)

Some other software's i have installed on my machine is Norton Internet Security 2009, Microsoft Office 2007 and Sony Ericsson PC Suite version 4(only meant for connectivity purposes).

The installation it self was not that hard, it is very straight forward and less attention required by the user. The version I downloaded and installed was not very updated operating system.

There was always updates for my system for a week. Generally although my machine is only a netbook category, it still have enough power to run the OS fluently. There were only a few occasion where I feel my machine is sluggish.

Norton Internet Security 2009 works like a charm on this new OS, the same goes to the MS Office 2007, However SE PC suite does not work with this OS.

I  also noticed that if you are updating or installing any software related to MS software, you will not be able to run any other MS program simultaneously or your system will hang and you may not get out from it other than powering off the system.

IE8 still do have bugs here and there, some of the web pages are not viewable with this browser, especially pages with lots of java scripts embedded.

Overall I would say that at least MS succeeded making Vista lighter and useable by netbook machines. I know that it is not fair to rate a beta version of OS but I still want to say that this OS is still suck at this moment of time, because the rate of hang ups are in tolerate-able.

3com Office Connect Wireless 11g

Have been wiggling with 3com Office connect wireless router which was on loan while my Dlink 2640T sent for warranty claim. Having some issues with the wireless and connectivity since first installed. It seems that the router managed to connect to the internet and wireless client also able to connect vie 40bit encryption with client mac address control.

However I experience that only domestic internet can get connected, any address that is International, it won’t show any pages. Had been wasted for a day today trying to solve this issue. Only tonite when I resetted the router to factory settings and remove the client mac address control I am able to browse the internet internationally.

Palestinian being bullied by the world!

What’s going on with the world? Why is it the american always backing up on Israeli. This is really double standard policy which adopted by the American.

This is the best and proudest policy backed by its people and around the world. The best part of it is the Arab country also is keeping their mouth shut.

All actions taken by Israeli’s are seems to be defensive, and what ever the Palestinian do is a terrorist act.

Wake up people! Please wake up! This must stop….

Acronis True Image 10.0 Home Edition

Had a preinstalled Acer Aspire One 150 and was not provided the recovery cd. This product is been provided a “Disk to Disk” recovery option by the manufacture. What I wanted t do is actually keep the original copy of the installation and reinstall a clean Window XP home on to the netbook to get rid of all the garbage application which came with the installation.

I use the Acronis True Image Home 10.0 edition and perform backup image on another external hard drive. Upon finishing the task I went ahead formating the drive and install the netbook. Once I started installing a message prompted me that the hard drive cannot be formated and had to end the installation.

I then boot up my system with the Acronis to restore the image copy which was saved earlier. Halfway restoring Acronis prompted that the archive is corrupted and the restored is incomplete. Both partition cannot be salvaged any more. What a disappointment I felt after all the hard work done prepping the system.

I sat down and try to recall what when wrong, and came to remember that I had made the backup image under maximum compression to save space and I didn’t validated the image is useable before formating my HDD. Luckily the image stii can be browse through and manage to copy the I386 folder and the oem* files from the C:/windows/../I386.

Look up the internet to read on how to recreate an OEM Window XP from a pre-installed systems, and from what I gather the easiest way is to use nLite. I read the nlite faq and guides, and go ahead with the process. I also slipstream IE7, SP3 and motherboard drivers on to the installation cd.

However, upon completing the installation my windows XP home still require me to activate my windows. I have read in some forums that OEMs installation should not have the activation process since it has been pre-registered. I have no choice and turn to Crack friend and stop the activation, (although I am the original user on the original netbook).

Moral of the story…. always check, confirm and validate your backups regularly before over writing or wiping of your HDD. To Acer, they should have included the recovery DVD on together with the hardware….

Windows Live Messenger Beta

I am ver frustated that Microsoft has disable the usage of MSN messenger 8.5. All new download of MSN messenger would be the latest which is the Live beta version. This version has a high requirement on resources and it will cluttered your screen once it logged in.

To whom is having larger screen should have no issue but if you are having netbook, this will definitely slows you down. Hoping Microsoft will do something that will enable the the msn messenger 8.5 again soon. The beta version is good, there’s a lot of enhancements such as the writer and etc, but it just kill the netbook.
